The Temptation of Tattooing

Bright and vibrant tattoos have become very common in today’s society. Some people get huge tattoos all over their bodies while some people just choose to get small, elegant ones that can easily be hidden. People who are serious about their tattoos usually have a meaning behind every tattoo and end up cherishing the piece forever; on the other hand, when people get tattooed without putting a lot of thought into it, they almost always end up hating it.
Most teenagers in high school think they want a tattoo. They think that it will be easy, painless, and they will love it forever; my hairdresser, Chey, seemed to think this. However, this is not the case.  Chey wanted nothing more than to get a tattoo. At 18 years old, she decided on a small butterfly tattoo. Pain wasn’t an issue; she was fearless. Chey walked into the tattoo shop and sat down, ready for her appointment. When it was her turn, the tattoo artist held up the sketch and transferred it onto my hairdressers lower back. It was huge. Chey figured it would be fine and let the artist continue. The tattoo artist turned on the noisy machine and let Chey get used to the sound before putting the needle to her skin. The artist proceeded to inject the butterfly’s ink under the skin of this 18 year old. An hour and a half. That was all it took to permanently place the butterfly on her forever. Twenty years later, Chey regrets it. She wants nothing more than to have it removed. As I have said earlier, if you don’t put enough thought into a tattoo, you can end up regretting it.
There is also the case that someone can regret getting a tattoo because it interferes with future plans.  If you just think about the moment and not how your actions can affect you in the future, it can cause a lot of damage. My boyfriend, Curtis, learned this the hard way. Curtis saved up his money, at age 17, to buy a tattoo gun. He was so excited seeing as he wants to be a tattoo artist when he grows up. He practiced on his step-dad; Curtis put a star on the one spot left on his step-dad's arm that wasn't yet covered by tattoos. It turned out to be a really nice looking tattoo for a beginner, so Curtis decided to do one on himself; He wanted “One Love” printed on his left middle finger. He understood how hard it would be to get a job with a tattoo on your hand, so he put it along the side of his finger; in spite of this understanding, Curtis didn't know the fact that there was no toleration for tattoos on your hands if you want to go into a branch of the military. Curtis realized this when he met up with a recruiter for the navy. Curtis seemed excited about it and liked the idea of being part of the navy. Seeing how his grandfather and his great grandfather were in the navy before, Curtis seemed really enthusiastic about following in their footsteps. Unfortunately, the recruiter saw a lion tattoo peeking out from under Curtis’ sleeve. The recruiter asked about all of Curtis’ tattoos; therefore, Curtis had to mention the one on his finger to the recruiter. The black ink shown like day on the side of Curtis’ finger. The recruiter informed Curtis that his dream of being in the Navy would have to be put on hold. To put it simply, Curtis will not be joining the navy without spending money to remove the tattoo. The procedure is very expensive and takes many painful visits to have it lasered off. Tattoo removal can also result in scarring if not taken care of properly.
Many people tend to get things that are in style at the moment when they get tattoos on a whim. I had a friend who recently got a tattoo on her wrist. It is the infinity sign and she thinks it is the coolest thing ever. Her mom signed for the tattoo and my friend, Jordan, got the tattoo at only 15 years old. Seeing as it has no meaning and she got it because it is in style makes me wonder how long it is going to take for her to start hating it. Her mom got a matching one, because Jordan and her mom were both going through a rough time; long story short, Jordan wanted to feel closer to her mom. I'm waiting for the day Jordan and her mom to argue over something ridiculous, like usual, and Jordan to start despising the matching tattoo idea she thought was so brilliant at the time. On the contrary, maybe she will start hating the tattoo when the infinity sign goes out of style. I guess I will have to wait and find out.
Tattoos can be a wonderful, amazing expression of your past: the hard times, the good times, the memories you want to cherish forever. They are something that can resemble family members or life changing events. Nevertheless, tattoos take a lot of planning and need plenty of time to be thought over before the appointment is made. If the tattoo is not thoroughly thought out, it can become a burden instead of a blessing.
